I was at Panther Hall the night of the Asleep at the Wheel show. Opening for
AAW was David Allan Coe. He was someone we knew of but everyone was there
for AAW. Coe was playing acoustic guitar with three black females doing
backgrounds vocals. He was okay but just kept playing and playing. People
got impatience and started booing trying to get him off the stage. It just
pissed him off and he kept going. We were with 2 other couples and the guys
were getting fairly loaded at this point. One of them threw a beer cup that
he thought was empty at the other one just to make him jump. The problem was
the cup was not empty and the beer splashed the guy right in the face and he
starts coming over the table trying to get at the one that threw the beer.
They were close friends but at that point it didn't matter. Me and a couple
of other guys separated them and Coe just kept singing. The guys weren't
going to calm down much so we just left to get them out of there. When we
walked out Coe was still singing and people were still booing. I'm convinced
that if Coe had finished and AAW had started the fight would never have
started and I could have seen AAW that night. I haven't liked Coe since.

I actually remember seeing, at Panther Hall,  a Fort Worth band called Space
Opera a few years before AAW.

I didn't go tp Panther Hall many times (too young) but I saw just about
every Saturday night TV show from there along with all the other Saturday
night  Channel 11 country shows. Panther Hall was the best, hands down
