Oh man! Add Sammi Smith ("Help Me Make It Through the Night") and Mel Tillis to your list of artists, both performing there on "Cowtown Jamboree" in the early '70s. I know because I was the emcee for both shows. Bo Powell and Bill Mack and I used to kind of trade off the emceeing duties. Bill Mack did the most of them because he was -deservedly so- the big star of the three of us. Bo Powell is a fixture for Fort Worth radio and I only stayed on the air 13 years before, as the ex-con says about getting out of jail, settling down and going straight! I remember, though, that the shows were live, not taped. I know the joke I had (and Bill and Bo probably had the same happen) was when I'd get up before the telecast and say "Now, this section of Panther Hall is going to be shown on the air, so if you don't want to be on TV then you better move." Oh man, and hahaha, a LOT of couples would get up and move "off camera" and out of frame.
Sammi Smith when she performed there told me about people coming up and giving one dollar bills for her to autograph. She'd do so and hand them back as souvenirs. This one big-shot high roller gave her a hundred dollar bill, I guess trying to impress his girlfriend. Sammi says she calmly put the hundred dollar bill in her bra and kept on signing one dollar bills for the other folks. Mel Tillis said "CCCCCCCCharlie, WWWWWWWhere's all the PPPPPPPretty girls in FFFFFFFort Worth?" The one and only time I ever rode a motorcycle Bo Powell had just bought a brand new Harley and was showing it off in front of Panther Hall. He and I were good buddies so he asked me if I'd like to ride it. "Sure" I says and off I go round and round Panther Hall. I was under the weather so I had been taking a nip or two of whiskey for medicinal purposes and just at the end of my ride, I gunned Bo's brand new Harley. Off it goes in one direction and off I go in another. Bent some things on both me and the Harley. Did Bo ever forgive me? I don't know. Ask Bo.
